Sonia Alfonso was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and since a little girl she knew that she will become an artist.

Sonia begin professionally singing at the age 18 years old and she was only 19 when represented her country in Mexico during the OTI Festival in 1984 obtaining the 5th price from 21 countries that participated.

After a great career as ballad singer, Sonia discovered her passion for acting. She made few appearances at prominent musical theater productions as “Claudia”, one of the main characters, in the first Spanish version of the renowned Broadway musical “In the heights” from Luis Manuel Miranda.

Sonia also has participated in a few films such as her playing in “The feast of the goat” with Isabella Rosellinni and Steven Bauer and her participation in the biopicture “Maria Montez” with Celines Toribio.

Sonia has made a turning point in her life as an artist including in her portfolio the jazz gender. And she does it big: with a new jazz production “Feeling good” and the great news that she wrote the Spanish version from 2 of the greatest jazz standards, “Summertime” (Es verano) and “The man I love” (Mi gran amor) and both Spanish versions got the approvals from the Warner Chappell, Warner Brothers. For the first time in almost 80 years this standards will be sung in Spanish thanks to Sonia.

The Dominican Diva has also written the English adaptation of the Latin classic “Voy a apagar la luz” (I will turn off the light) from the great Mexican author Armando Manzanero. And he was so pleased that Sonia got his approval for it. And she invited to participate in this English version to the great Cuban trumpethist Arturo Sandoval, winner of 9 Grammys.

Sonia was the first dominican jazz singer in the Blue Note Jazz Festival 2016 celebrating its 50th anniversary and is going to be performing with her band this September 22 and 24 at Subrosa Night Club in 63 Gansevoort Street in West Village NYC. This is a gig you dont want to miss!!!
